Kamehameha Schools (KS) Maui faculty and staff were confused about the school’s multiple program initiatives, mission and core values. They were unclear about the values and initiatives that were unique to KS Maui and those that were embraced by all Kamehameha Schools campuses as part of the overall KS educational philosophy. KS Maui faculty and staff saw each message as separate initiatives without a clear understanding of how all of the messages came together to create a cohesive educational framework. To highlight KS Maui’s core values and clarify how these values related to the school’s educational philosophy, Julie rewrote all value descriptions to demonstrate how the overall school philosophy of kuʻupau (giving it all you’ve got) applied to the school’s core values of pilina (relationships), kuleana and kūlia pono (responsibility), and ʻimi naʻauao (wisdom). She also clearly connected how all of the values contributed to the school’s learner profile, the Ōiwi Leader. She interviewed key KS Maui alumni and completed in-depth profiles of individual alums who demonstrated the school’s core values through their work after graduating. This work with KS Maui successfully rebranded and helped to clarify the school’s core values, mission and vision and its unique place within the Kamehameha Schools system.
